First past the post is the voting system in which each voter casts a vote for exactly one candidate. In a single position election the candidate with the most votes is the winner.

In the USA, FPTP is used for most single-member elections at all levels of government, Federal, state, and local. Most of the exceptions are various states and localities that have runoff elections if no candidate gets a majority. Also, a few localities now use instant runoff voting. However, all Federal positions use FPTP

The US has primaries before the main elections, where people vote for which candidate of a party will continue onward to the main elections. This makes the main elections something like a runoff round.
